Natural dyeing with woad and weld yesterday at The National Wool Museum, Pembrokeshire with Susan Martin.
We created beautiful shades of blues and greens. It was a bit of an experiment too with different yarns/fleece like soya bean fibre, bamboo and alpaca. Wonderful watching the colour oxidise as you pull it out from the dye bath! It’s like a combination of cooking and science and a bit of magic! This could get quite addictive…though I don’t think I’ll go back to ancient traditions and smear woad on my cheeks for war paint…far too smelly!
